Global Well-Being: Rooted
in the World's Forests
2011 has been declared the International Year of Forests,
and while a few bright spots exist, forests today face
a host of challenges. Mounting pressures from agricultural
expansion, rapid economic development, and growing demand
for products are leading to deforestation and degradation
of forests at alarming rates. The expanding global population
- expected to reach 9 billion people by mid-century
- is increasing demand for food, encroaching on forests
and the value they hold. Jonathan Lash and Nigel Sizer
highlight strategies from around the world that could
help restore and protect forests for future generations.
